Gemini now lets you edit generated files without leaving the app
Gemini can now generate, preview and edit PDFs, Docs, Sheets, slides, Markdown, text and code in the app, which may make the first request matter more.
What happened
Google has added file editing to Gemini. According to The Verge, you can now generate, preview and edit PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown files, TXT files and code directly within Gemini. The capabilities are available starting today for all Gemini users, the report says.
There is a catch on platforms. PDF previewing and editing works on both web and mobile, but every other file format is web-only for now.
Google added support for generating and downloading files in Gemini earlier this year. What is new is the editing step. You can expand a document into full-screen mode, highlight text and either ask Gemini a question about it or prompt it to change that passage. The example given is highlighting a table and asking Gemini to turn it into a graph.
The Verge notes that Gemini could already edit files through its Workspace integrations, such as the Gemini bar in Google Docs. It also points out that Anthropic launched a feature earlier this year that lets users generate and edit documents and presentations in Claude chats.
What it means for the reader
The practical change is that editing a generated file no longer requires leaving the Gemini app. The file sits in Gemini, and you can keep working on it there.
That is convenient, but it may also change where the effort goes. If a draft arrives with the wrong structure, the wrong audience or the wrong length, you can now fix it one highlighted passage at a time, and each of those fixes is another request.
Claude and Google have both moved towards editing documents inside the conversation, which suggests the first message may increasingly shape how many edits follow.
Where ProperPrompt fits
ProperPrompt is built for that first message. It turns what you would normally type into a prompt with a goal, constraints, a deadline and acceptance criteria. You write the loose version, and ProperPrompt gives you the structured one.
To see the difference on your own work, take the request you would send Gemini for your next document, run it through ProperPrompt, and compare the draft you get with the one you usually get.
