What happened

Earlier this month, Anthropic announced a new benefit for its Max and Team subscriptions. According to Simon Willison, subscribers paying $100, $200 or $500 a month would receive the equivalent quantity of credits to use with the Anthropic API. The credits expire.

OpenAI has now launched, in Willison's words, "pretty much exactly the same deal". Anyone on a $100, $200 or $500 plan with OpenAI gets the same quantity of credits, to be applied to one of their API organisations.

Willison says he keeps subscriptions with both companies, and calls the change great news for him. He adds that he may now ship some public-facing demos, because the credits are already covered by his existing subscriptions.

What it means for the reader

The two companies are now offering the same thing at the same price points. Plans at these prices now come with API credits as well.

The credits expire, and credits that lapse are most useful to people who have something to spend them on. Willison's own example is demos he may now ship. For a reader who only ever types into a chat box, the credits could sit unused unless there is a project to point them at.

The page does not say how any of this changes the usage limits on the chat plans themselves, and we will not guess.

Whether the budget is a flat subscription or a block of expiring credits, a request that has to be asked twice uses the allowance twice.

Where ProperPrompt fits

ProperPrompt exists for the gap between what you meant and what you typed. It turns what you would normally type into a prompt with a goal, constraints, a deadline and acceptance criteria, so the request states what finished looks like.

Credits and limits are the model companies' business. Making each request count is ours.
